January 12th, 2012

This just in: Suzanne'Silver's Deadband LP is now available in our store. Originally slotted for a late 2011 release, this one was arguably about as drag-ass as they come. My bad. So now we'll list this as an early 2012 gem that is of the especially limited variety -- 150 mixed color vinyl; hand screened, embossed, and, yes, serially numbered for the sake of authenticity. You'll want to be on this.

Best of 2011

1.) Olive-James Conrad
Things -- all encompassing -- will slow down a bit at RID headquarters while we raise our 10-week-old future intern. Fear not, though, as all orders will be filled in as timely a manner as little OJ Conrad will permit. Might take an extra day or two to process your much appreciated orders. We're not gone, just somewhat dormant.

2.) MY DISCO - Little Joy (Temporary Residence)
Minimalist post-punk straight outta Melbourne. The brothers Andrews handle the guitars and a dude named Rohan bounces behind the kit. Some would say this is methodical to the point of monotony. I'd emphatically argue otherwise.

3.) Broken Water
This Olympia three-piece is about to blow up. We're very proud to have been working with them for the disc format for both 2010's Whet and 2011's Peripheral Star EP. Expect big things from these fine folks. 2012 stands to be a big year for them.

4.) Retox - Ugly Animals (Three One G / Ipecac)
Justin Pearson just shreds his vocals here. There's a special pedigree that involves members of The Locust, Some Girls, Holy Molar, and Festival of Dead Deer. I've loved all of them. Retox is no exception. Highly recommended for anybody who enjoys a solid grip below the belt line.

5.) Young Widows - In And Out Of Youth And Lightness (Temporary Residence)
This is a great follow up to Old Wounds. There was a shift between Settle Down City and Old Wounds that was, in turn, placed under a microscope for further inspection here. The pace is gradual yet the overall weight remains the same. Yep, Louisville's still got it. This is proof.

6.) Bill Badgely
Fellow Yakima native Bill Badgely was busy in 2011. I've got to give a major shout-out for his having made good on his promise to make a film about one of the heaviest bands of all time, KARP. The process didn't flow easily as Bill knew virtually nothing about filmmaking prior to the start of production. I've got to admire his tenacity. 2011 also saw a brief reunion of Bill's sweat-drenched band, Federation X. The Hatchet Man and Charlie Jackie Freedom Pride still rule.

7.) Bitch Magnet - S/T (Temporary Residence)
This is a worthy reissue of a collection of songs by a completely influential band that had nearly been forgotten. These guys inspired the likes of Rodan, Crain, June of '44, Slint, etc. As a plus, drummer Orestes Morfin unknowingly passed his technical chops along to me as I spent a substantial part of my youth learning from his every move. Includes all songs from Star Booty, Umber, and Ben Hur as well as some alternate takes scattered throughout. The Bitch is back.

8.) Drive
I'm a fan of film. Sometimes overly so. My first encounter with the work of Nicolas Winding Refn was Valhalla Rising, a glacially paced Viking pic. Slow as fuck, yes, but a gorgeous meditation on material that was violent to the core. Refn has shown that he's got a knack for bringing beauty to what would turn the stomachs of most. His latest, Drive, is without doubt the best film I've ever seen in my entire life. The violence might be a bit much for most to take but, if you can look beyond that, this is really a story about an impossible love. Driver is utterly mysterious as the hero who reaches his goal via brutal means. Gosling is great. Albert Brooks is even better in a dark turn of character. The songs (mainly underground electronica) and the score (Cliff Martinez) help to underline what's already an impressive story.

Cartographer's Hats, Capes, Dark Arts disc is finally available in our store. It's wicked cheap, too. $6.00us. This press is limited to 125, hand embossed. If standalone disc is for you, act now. Visit our online store. You've also got the option to snag the band's vinyl/disc combo package via Bandcamp.

We're weeks away from having our grips on some retail copies of Suzanne'Silver's Deadband. As can happen with vinyl processing, there have been a few snags along the way that have slowed things down somewhat. Fear not, though, as the final press has been approved and all 150 pieces ought to be in transit by now. Hand screened jackets. Embossed. Serially numbered for those who collect. Arguably one of the best albums I've had the chance to listen to all year long. Bonus points for getting to call this one of our own!

Check back in a few weeks for a writeup of the year in review.

RE: Suzanne'Silver:

Expect "Deadband" the much anticipated follow-up to "The Crying Mary" to land early this fall. 200 copies will be available on 12" mixed-color vinyl. Not to be missed!

RE: Cripple and Casino:

Our Croatian friends have initiated the process of demoing for the follow-up to 2010's well received self-titled debut. We've got much anticipation for this one as the band continues to strike their name across all of the European region.

RE: Broken Water:

Says Justin Spicer at KEXP:
As major labels continue to exist behind the times, artists and labels with little capital and lesser reputations are producing some of the most innovative, interesting, and inspiring music. Whether it’s creating a new niche in digital technology or looking to once obsolete formats, Agitated Atmosphere hopes to pull back the curtain on a wealth of sights and sound from luminaries such as Broken Water.
How three-piece Broken Water remains a mystery, even amongst the music-hungry masses of their Pacific Northwest backyard. The Olympian trio blasted open the time machine doors with their critically adored Whet. The joint release of the album — particularly its exposure to DIY aficionados under the cloak and dagger of premiere Iowa City label Night People — lent Broken Water an audience it may not have known it had: a group of experimental fans who thirsted for the grunged bliss of yesteryear.
The rebirth of the “alternative” 90s is now well in effect thanks to reunions and reformations. As Whet set Broken Water’s course toward the late 80s/early 90s confusion of Dinosaur Jr. and Sonic Youth, they eagerly veered off course thanks to the darkly shoegaze of their follow-up 7-inch, “Normal Never Happened” b/w “Faux King Vogue.” Never content to be pinned down by retro references and daring not repeat them, it’s this same attention to challenging themselves that inhabits their latest EP, Peripheral Star.
The pained shoegaze of “Normal Never Happened” finds itself stuffed into a succinct package courtesy of EP opener and title track, “Peripheral Star.” The track isn’t as sprawling as its ancestor but more than makes up for it with a sensual melody and a chainsaw guitar riff. “Okane No” is a playful addition to Broken Water’s repertoire, utilizing a lazy fuzz bass and cute vocal inflection that showcases a band comfortable straddling the lines of experimentalism and pop. “Kansas” and its antithesis, “Stop Means Stop,” are Peripheral Star’s standouts, finding Broken Water doing what they do best: grow. “Kansas” is Whet post-college; slacker streak intact, but a head full of knowledge and a bowing book shelf heavy with sinister ideas and heady reads. “Stop Means Stop” stands on the strength of its brutal yet catchy punk influence.
Why the Pacific Northwest continues to sleep on their very own remains an open question but consider this your chance to check in with before the Sandman’s spell is lifted and everyone’s grogginess becomes wide-eyed devotion.

Broken Water have safely returned from a tour of epic proportions. Many thanks to all who had a hand in setting this up for them. Especially those who provided food and a cozy place to stay while visiting your city.

Production is underway on an ultra-limited print of Cartographer's (ex-Replicator) debut in the compact disc format. More on that soon...

Also beginning production on Suzanne'Silver's "Deadband" LP. This will appear as a limited press in 12" vinyl format. Drop a line if you'd like to reserve a copy. Lists can definitely be made.

Several more Broken Water dates have been added. The spring tour now qualifies as mega. Hover and click!

Jonathan Harnish of Built On A Weak Spot still enjoys Wisdom Teef.
Says Jonathan of the S/T LP:
It seems like I am long overdue in getting something up here about the Olympia, WA trio Wisdom Teef (or occasionally “Teeth”). Seeing as how I’ve enjoyed their past couple EP’s, Blue and last years White. It only makes sense to acknowledge that fact by letting people out there know that they have a new LP out…or at least it’s new to me but I am pretty sure this came out sometime late last year. Ignore that though and give this a listen if you will. Wisdom Teef initially caught my attention back in ’07 with the aforementioned debut EP Blue. A bit different then from where they are presently as a band, and that includes a personnel change on bass, back in their beginnings there was a snottier attitude to go along with a fuller booming post-punk sound. Between the years of Blue and their follow up White the band scaled it down some and the “less is more” sort of idea that they’ve taken on with these recent recordings has really worked well for them I think. Seemingly working in layers, but not in the typical sense. Wisdom Teef appear to be three different parts that all move at different speeds when listening to the LP. Member Forrest Peaker lets his vocals casually trail along behind the wild tempo changes, completely unaffected by the sudden shift of motion that is taking place by bassist William Firth, drummer Matt Lebens, and even his own guitar work. Lebens is especially fun to listen to on this record with his rapid fire and often inventive drumming throughout both sides of this LP. It’s hard to imagine what this record would sound like without him filling up as much space as he does here. But when every one of these layers is applied on top of one another, it creates a pretty impressive collage of sounds that ultimately goes back to their post-punk beginnings. It’s just that three or so years later they’ve learned how to really handle the medium and it shows here on this album.

Honorable Mentions - 2010 Edition

Jason B. Noble
I had the opportunity to speak to Jason via telephone in November. It was a 90-minute conversation that truly put many things into perspective for me. In my youth -- shortly after the balls had descended -- I began to observe, with a fine science, the Louisville music scene. Jason, via Rodan, was one of the first names I remember learning as I'd follow this art community's incestuous nature. It seemed that the dissection of one band kept on leading me to a series of comparable others. Jason had never even met me so it was interesting, as we spoke, trying to explain to him the hand that he and his fellow artists had in my upbringing. My wish for the upcoming year is for Jason's health and well-being as a husband, a contributing member of countless bands, a record store employee, and as a politically left-leaning member of a Rand Paul state.

Tiger Shower Caps / Wisdom Teef - Hot August Nights
It was tough to find a period of time this year that was more enjoyable than the nine-day jaunt with Stuttgart, Germany's Tiger Shower Caps. Ralf, Daniel, Torsten, and Pascal proved to be gentlemen of the finest class. Kind, sophisticated, funny, and amazingly talented. It seemed like the trip to San Francisco was already over before we really even had the chance to start. Cheers to TSC! You're dearly missed.

White Lung - It's The Evil (Deranged)
Where to begin... From start to finish this is such a fun and engaging listen. I'm just one of a vast many critics who has offered the nod to this recording. Justin's guitar work is the best I've heard since I was first introduced to that of a mid-90s John Reis. Mish's playfully pissed vocal delivery is absolutely memorable as well. Track 2, "Atlanta", takes the cake although "Viva La Rat", "Sleep Creep", and "Two Seen" round out the edges of side A nicely. Anne-Marie and Grady do a damn fine job of rhythmically anchoring the band at the spine. Side B has absolutely no fluff as this is sure to smack each listener as one of the year's best. I'm eagerly awaiting their next move.

Shipping News - One Less Heartless To Fear (Karate Body / Noise Pollution)
It's no surprise that I'd find this to be among the year's best. My musical upbringing would have fallen way short had it not been for the Louisville music community that paved the way for so many others. This one is recorded live and picks up right where Flies The Fields left off.

Broken Water - Whet
The critical acclaim that came along with this record, as well as countless days out on the road, clearly cemented Broken Water's standing as Olympia's most formidable export.

Suzanne'Silver - Deadband demo
It's taken quite some time for our fine Sicilian friends to follow up their impressive RID debut, The Crying Mary. Spoiler Alert: Deadband, arriving in 2011, is SO worth the wait.

Red X Red M - Between Your Prayers... (Australian Cattle God)
David, Yuri, and Adam whip out some damn-fine post-punk. Always excited by domestic bands who are exciting. So excited, in fact, that RID will be issuing this on disc early next year.

Thanks to all who continue to support the RID family. Couldn't do this without you. Cheers to the new year!

November 13th, 2010

Minus the threat of blunt-force tooth removal, a small French community is developing a fondness for Olympia's Wisdom Teef. Says Xavier Jagu of Perte Et Fracas...

Olympia, Washington. In this state of North America, is known mainly K Records. But there is another label that goes as far as the Radio is Down. His latest discovery, it was found in the same hometown, history does not say if it's in a dentist's office, and is called Wisdom Teeth. Or Teef. You can find both. Or all three, since it is the number of records produced by this trio album that just tumble. As the unity of these three outputs of their young careers can not be denied, that we discover everything (almost) the same time, we make a wholesale price for a global praise.
Through two EPs five tracks self-titled but known as the Blue EP in 2007, because the cover is blue and the White EP in early 2010 because the cover is .. gray, Wisdom Teeth and harsh minimalism has won once. Under the banner of post-punk, we catch a lot of things but Wisdom Teeth has the right to claim, rather than the working majority. Because not only do they not ape anyone, but in addition, they have swallowed whole spirit by not doing any thinking group. It is always better than nothing. Teef Wisdom is not complicated. That's good threesome guitar-bass-drums, abrasive, dark whose registration with the line gives an aura austere. Point of debauchery and dramatic gestures. You could almost find a lack of scope with a little wobbly on some side passages. But the charm of their youth that she has nothing to envy anyone when you must write all of the compounds in nerve, carried by the strength of the group, singing Forrest Peaker, also a guitarist. A voice in the GW Sok (former singer of The Ex, I prefer to clarify for beginners), while suppressed anger, half-chanted, half-spoken, wearing, lifting each title after the vocal cords. Compos picked on themselves, balls of suet, ready to pounce. The Beautiful Mistakes, Drone City Riot Eyes (on the second EP with the arrival of a new bassist on two tracks), which show an increasing quality compared to an EP which already excellent titles like Building Blocks and Golden were already ripe. No head no more in pieces, everything fits and it takes everything.
And then comes the time of the album and the sore subject, the big downside of this Cometh. Of the nine tracks, there are five of the White EP. At the same. As you are very strong in arithmetic, you have calculated that there are only four unreleased tracks. As you are all very strong, you quickly realize that you can do without an EP. Not like some ... Unless you are a fan that turns from white to gray. Or like the format in which 10''due out this EP soon and his big brother. In short, groups that stand out twice for the same titles, see the entire disc to the next, we should pull out their teeth one by one. To catch up, the vinyl is a beautiful mottled purple. For others, you'll first card simply remarkable, concise, with a bitter thorny guitar, melodic sowing seeds that remain in the mouth and a beautiful locked groove at the end of the tooth face sad. And as the four previously unpublished, which were probably recorded during the same period as the other five do not dépareillent in the lot, you have the birth of a new group as exciting flagship post-punk past generation.

October 30th, 2010

Guess what. Broken Water is on tour again. Dates just added to their RID band page. Arguably the busiest band on the roster, these fine Olympians continue to spread their good word. Much buzzed about and well worth seeing in the flesh. Slow-nod induced neck cramp forthcoming.

In other good news, Glasgow's Ex Wives are back at it! They're fresh off the heels of a lovely show with Bellini no less. Enter new bassist Nollaig Wray. Could this mean that an LP is finally back on the table? More soon...

October 9th, 2010

This just in: Tiny Mix Tapes digs Broken Water's "Normal Never Happened" 7-inch. Says Justin Spicer...

Much like the 80s revival that swallowed the Aughts (and continues to spill into the new decade), a 90s renaissance is brewing below the mainstream, ready to pounce on tired sounds much like it did when Seattle upchucked its flannel-clad missives onto Hollywood record labels. It was what brought many ears to Broken Water's Whet earlier this year. While the Olympia trio isn't cashing in on Soundgarden and Pavement reunions, one can't help but see Sonic Youth and Dinosaur Jr. birdies circling their noggin when Normal Never Happened knocks 'em out cold. It's relatively easy to point to the EVOL/Daydream Nation mash-up A-side (and wax namesake), "Normal Never Happened," in proceeding with such an argument but one will also find a darker edge — one might say, showgaze. "Faux King Vogue" produces the more vitriolic 90s nostalgia punch in the alterna-teeth. But it feels cheap to lavish Broken Water with dusty praise and bygone comparisons. Maybe the hypothesis is all wrong; maybe Broken Water are waiting to quell the 90s resurgence with a bit of ingenuity and vigor all their own. As quickly as alternative music rightfully descended from its A&R throne, it was snuffed out before it had a chance to mutate. Consider Normal Never Happened that metamorphosis with a decade's worth of observation to make it worth the wait.

As does Jonathan Harnish of Built On A Weak Spot:
The Olympia, WA based Broken Water have been turning up gold thus far during their brief career. Their LP Whet is still a highlight among music I’ve listened to this year and I imagine it’s going to remain as such. Part of me would welcome a change in direction, however the other part of me absolutely loves what they are doing currently and I guess in the end it probably doesn’t matter a whole hell of a lot so long as that’s the case. Broken Water have a working formula and are more than locked in, as this new single on Fan Death merely solidifies that. The Sonic Youth comparisons are going to run rampant again, maybe more so due to the b-side ‘Faux King Vogue” with Jon on vocals and his practical Thurston like delivery. However, the muddy shoegazy aspect of the band has always kind of gotten them past that in my mind and really I sort of revel in the down and out bummer vibe that Broken Water are dealing with a bit more heavily in their tunes. The a-side “Normal Never Happened” probably sounds more in line with the tracks that make up their LP, kind of creeping along underneath a fog like a more fucked up earlier Lily’s I’d say. I don’t think I’ll ever get sick of that.

Hey, so does Jason at 7INCHES:
I still play the hell out of Broken Water's full length from Night People, "Whet", it's immediately so familiar...it definitely brings back Goo and Repetition...experimental, voluminous trio rock. They must love this stuff as much as I do, to have come up with these sincere tracks that go some new places and fit right into the most revered and played section of the record shelves.
"Normal Never Happened". They have it nailed. Down to the cryptic title. Grungy off tuned guitar melody, that sludgy slower feel rock rolling in and out that plays off the following fast hi-hat section and harmonized vocals between Abigail and Kanako (I'm assuming Jon is the dead on Thurston vocal). They're raising the bar...it's one thing Unwound never had was that back and forth between Sara and Justin. They have an ear for those complex masses of distorted harmonies that come out towards the end on this track...they go from all delicate and Bloody Valentine to bowel breaking Mudhoney. It's authentic as hell, it's in every second of this. More than lost tracks from all the influences they bring to mind, it's a case in point for you only get to this point by working through you're history. They really could go anywhere from here... To sound this good already?
"Faux King Vogue", these are the vocals that are dead on Thurston, in the best way...to even try to pull this off proves they're just doing their own thing. A melodic picked electric melody goes from folk to jangly indie to steeple crushing almost Pelican metal. They obviously don't mind sounding like anyone...they have to know they do...but it doesn't matter, when it's done like this, they pay homage and innovate at the same time, continuing a line of thinking that I don't think is ever really gong to be finished. Great guitar tones that defined an entire decade, Jon pushes that sort of grunge sound into a huge pile, like the Big Sleep, the layers of low dissonant distortion. The song construction, drum recording, fading feedback...it's more than reminding me of an entire decade of Sonic Youth and Unwound... it's more than nostalgic, it might be a wake up call to get back to some basics...guys this is serious.
God knows I love Unwound, and this is very nearly filling that giant gaping wound. It's so great to think about some kid in Olympia coming across these guys and then working backwards to those ancient classic influences. Hearing that shit for the first time, after being blown away by this.
They also get major points for letter pressing all their singles so far, and these have random ink splatters all over the front. it's the kind of thing that makes the 7" so great...someone went through each one and flung the ink and hung it over the kitchen table from a clothesline to dry...and the best part is the blue cardstock sleeve was re-appropriated from some elementary classroom exercise hanging folder. Genius.

Very pleased to announce that Broken Water have confirmed to play at the annual music festival that is Total Fest! The fest will take place, as always, in Missoula, Montana during the weekend of August 19-21st. For more info regarding the purchasing of tickets, Missoula barbeque etiquette, horse balls, potato guns, etc., go HERE!

Says Total Fest IX promo...

I had the pleasure of seeing Broken Water play a show at the Capitol Theater with Japanther and Kimya Dawson in Olympia, Washington in December of 2009. Seeing bands I love away from home is one of my favorite things, ever. I was surrounded by friends, family and a ton of stangers; I had a blast. I didn't know anything about Broken Water, though my two Missoula transplant pals assured me that I was in for a treat. I was reminded that a few years earlier, I had seen BW band members Kanako (drums/vox) and Jon (guitar/vox) play in another band, Sisters, also with Japanter, also in Olympia, also awesome. Although it's difficult to touch on exactly what makes this band so great and why I'm so excited that they are coming to Total Fest, I can assure you that they've got the DIY spirit. I anticipate only that you'll love their slighly Siouxsie Sioux/My Bloody Valentine pop psych tunes, low key vibe and groovy live set. Broken Water are one of those bands whose love of the music they make is palpable on the faces of the players. In one of those rare very genuine "we're stoked" kind of ways.

Replicator's Conan Neutron is in the process of publicly dropping the pants of Karl Rove. The process, as I've read, is called a Google Bomb.

Says Neutron:

Karl Rove is coming out with a memoir called "Courage and Consequence". We are putting out a compilation LP by the same name that is coming out before his book. Songs about, pertaining to, or answers to Karl Rove specifically. We are going to culture jam his memoir and wreck his special day by dominating google results, amazon sales, etc.

We also are making a hell of a compilation.

This is a completely grassroots effort funded by donations and pre-orders.
